History of The Orijinal Royal Jewel
Read The Story Behind The Sparkle
The Nizam of Hyderabad Parure
The Nizam of Hyderabad Parure is historically significant as one of the most valuable jewelry acquisitions in the British royal collection. Beyond its material worth, the set is unique for its provenance; unlike traditional commissions or ancestral bequests, these pieces were personally selected by a young Princess Elizabeth under a "blank check" offer from one of the wealthiest men of the 20th century.
The "Open Selection" Gift
In 1947, as a wedding gesture for the future Queen Elizabeth II, the Nizam of Hyderabad (Asaf Jah VII) instructed French Jewelry House to allow the bride-to-be to choose any items from their existing inventory. The 21-year-old Princess selected an elaborate diamond and platinum floral tiara and a coordinating necklace. This transaction represented a bridge between the immense wealth of the Indian princely states and the start of the new Elizabethan era.
The Nizam of Hyderabad Tiara
The diadem was a premier example of English floral naturalism, featuring a series of intricate roses and foliage pavé-set with diamonds. It was noted for its modular engineering:
- The Detachable Roses: The three primary rose motifs could be removed from the frame to function as individual brooches.
- The Dismantlement: Despite being a favorite during the first two decades of her reign, the Queen authorized the dismantling of the tiara in 1973.
- The Burmese Ruby Connection: The diamonds from the original Nizam frame were repurposed to create the Burmese Ruby Tiara, a new commission designed to house a collection of rubies gifted by the people of Burma.
- The Surviving Brooches: While the tiara’s structure no longer exists, the three diamond rose brooches were preserved as independent pieces. They remained some of the Queen’s most frequently utilized ornaments until her death in 2022.
The Nizam of Hyderabad Necklace
Remaining in its original, spectacular 1930s configuration, the necklace is often cited by gemologists as the most financially valuable item in the royal vaults. Its architecture is characterized by:
- Diamond Chain: A series of 38 brilliant-cut diamonds.
- The Pendant: A central double-drop feature incorporating 13 emerald-cut diamonds and a massive pear-shaped diamond drop.
- Modern Usage: The late Queen loaned this masterpiece to the Princess of Wales (Catherine) for several high-profile events, including a 2014 gala at the National Portrait Gallery. Following the Queen's passing, it has been utilized by Queen Camilla, most notably for the December 2025 State Visit of the German President, where its scale served as a definitive symbol of sovereign authority.
